Neeta's Flight Phobia - "It's gone! You've cured me!"Yes, we know we're not allowed to say that, but our clients can! Pre-Therapy Chat Neeta said she would like help easing her anxiety issues around flying. An intelligent 35 year old mother, Neeta manages her own business. She openly admits to being lucky with her lifestyle choices, with her husband and a beautiful son. For the past few years, her worry about her anxiety has been building up and she felt that it was getting worse. Each time they go away on holiday, she asks her husband to check, or feel, the plane before she even boards. She said she felt okay during the actual take off and landing, but her tension grew during the flight itself. She felt that her fear was getting a little out of control and thought it may have begun at a young age when her mother became worried about her safety when going on fair rides – pointing out the fragility of nuts and bolts that hold the machine together – and, possibly as a result of a recent heartbreaking series of deaths in the family. Because of these deaths, she was beginning to understand that it doesn’t matter how strong you are, life can still be taken away from you. Her fear was not primarily for her own sake, but for her son’s and she recognised the connection between this fear and the fear that her mother had for her when she was young. Both these patterns appear to have imprinted in her mind, her own mortality. This fear of flying, together with her fear of dying, appears to have caused her to fear for her own child’s safety. After freely admitting that she has a strong mind, she felt that the HG session might help her and was willing to give it a go, as her forthcoming flight to Mauritius was making her feel doubly anxious and she wanted to get over this feeling. Therapy Session 1 So that we had an achievable set of goals for her sessions, I asked Neeta to give an ideal scenario if she had a ‘miracle switch’ what her life would be like. She said she would like to: 1. help ease her anxiety through relieving fear of flying 2. aid general relaxation and relief of tension she felt about the ‘way of dying’ 3. help lift stress caused by this anxiety How we achieved the goalsLinked her professionalism to the professionalism of the aeroplane makers who made these machines for a purpose. We covered a breathing technique to help teach Neeta a new way of relaxing that was within her own control. A metaphorical story was offered to her as it covered the challenges that come at us from all angles. While she experienced Guided Imagery, suggested goals were embedded through the actions she could take while boarding the plane to help her feel safe and secure. Positive words were offered about the sensations that she could feel while flying – a sense of freedom, relaxed and pleasurable – so she could be lifted up (implied in the expression ‘fly like a bird’). Note: Before we went through the Guided Imagery, Neeta was a little reluctant, but gained trust in my ability to perform this for her by being ‘consciously involved’ in the process. At the start of our session she played with her hands and stroked her hair, quite agitated. I suggested that she could relax in anyway that she felt comfortable and suggested that she could remain in control at all times. After the therapy, Neeta reported that at the start she was aware of all her thoughts and her mind was not still, however, at the end of the therapy session, she felt a sense of heaviness that she had not experienced before. As a result, she expressed more positive emotions towards the impending flight, and wanted to go out and ‘do it tomorrow.’ Therapy Session 2The second session was given after her flight to her holiday destination. How did she feel – physically and emotionally: She was laughing, giggling and very happy. She confirmed that all her fears were gone and laughed that "It's gone - you've ‘cured me!" Session Length: 36 minutes All names have been changed to protect the identity of the subjects. This was a 1-2-1 Human Givens Therapy session
